Mission

Natural Curiosity (NC) is an environmental education program housed at the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study Laboratory School, OISE-University of Toronto. In 2018, NC launched a new resource for educators, Natural Curiosity 2nd Edition: The Importance of Indigenous Perspectives in Children’s Environmental Inquiry, which supports a stronger basic awareness of Indigenous perspectives and their importance to environmental education. The driving motivation for a second edition was the burning need, in the wake of strong and unequivocal recommendations by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, to situate Indigenous perspectives into the heart of Canadian educational settings and curricula, most notably in connection with environmental and outdoor education. NC continues to fulfill this mandate by directly collaborating with Indigenous partners to support educators to incorporate an inquiry-based approach into their teaching practice, connecting children’s learning deeply to the natural world
