Take Me Outside Day | October 24 2018

It’s time to get outside Canada! We are a nation known for outdoor pursuits but the reality is, we are spending less and less time outside, including the kids. That’s a big shame on so many levels, not least because it’s taking a toll on our health and well-being. Take Me Outside Day is a reminder to do just that. It’s an invitation to schools to extend the classroom beyond the four walls and engage with school grounds and natural areas for at least an hour on October 24th.

Why October 24th?

In 2011, Colin Harris, founder and Executive Director of Take Me Outside ran over 7,600 kilometres (the equivalent of 181 marathons!) from St. John’s, NL to Victoria, BC. Along the way, he visited 80 schools and met with almost 20,000 students, talking about the importance of finding balance between the amount of time they spend outside and the time they are spending in front of screens. The final day of his cross Canada run was in late October. To celebrate the end of his mega-run and to continue the momentum of awareness raising on this important issue, Take Me Outside Day was established. It is a day to highlight the importance of unplugging and spending time outside, being active and connecting with nature. It’s also a time to play and have fun in the fresh air. We hope you’ll join us.

Since inception, more than 1 million students have participated in Take Me Outside Day. This year we hope to crack a quarter of a million in a single day.

How To Be Involved With Take Me Outside Day

We want to keep it simple and fun, so here are a few things you can do.

1. Get Outside!

Commit to spending at least 1 hour outside with your class on October 24th. Ideally, it’s during class time, but outside recesses and lunches seem to be dwindling, so anything goes!

2. Count Yourself In!

We want to make sure your numbers are counted. Confirm your participation by e-mailing info at takemeoutside.ca. Simply say, “We’re in!” and include a few details. We want to know where your school is, how many students and teachers are taking part, and maybe some of the activities you’re planning to do. OR fill out the form below with those details.

3. Share your stories!

Visit our Facebook page or Twitter and post pictures or stories of what you’re doing on that day – we’re using #TakeMeOutsideDay (We have mixed feelings on social media, but if we can inspire others to get out, then we think it’s worth it!). As well, we’d love for you to post some pictures and stories after the fact. Where did you go? What did you do?  Who was involved? How much fun did you have? Tell your story and share it with other schools across the country! If social media isn’t your thing, no problem, you can still e-mail us those pictures and stories, we’ll skip Facebook and just put them up on our website.

4. Get Creative!

Last year, many schools embraced Take Me Outside Day and made it their own. If you want to organize something unique for your school, go for it! The doors are wide open for how you spend your time outside. And remember, there’s no time limit, some schools last year spent a whole morning or afternoon outside doing activities! We’d love to hear about whatever you do, so let us know. And if you need ideas, we’ve compiled a few here.

5. Spread the Word!

We need everyone’s help to spread the word far and wide. We would really appreciate it if you passed along the poster and info about Take Me Outside Day to other education contacts you have. And, if you have connections to media, this is a great opportunity to have the local newspaper or TV station come out to cover the story. This is an important issue with the increasing rates of obesity, diabetes and generally poorer health that is resulting from sedentary lifestyles. Help us raise awareness about the importance of being outside and have lots of fun doing it!
